What Is Energy Healing? A Gentle Journey into the Unseen…

Close your eyes for a moment. Breathe in slowly. Feel your chest rise and fall, your shoulders soften away from your ears, your jaw unclench (yes, that one, you've been clenching it all day).

Now consider this: what if the part of you that feels tired, tender, or tangled isn't only in your body or your mind, but in something deeper, something that hums quietly beneath it all?

Welcome to energy healing. Settle in. There's no rush here, we have all day. Time is really just an construct.

An Ancient Remembering

Long before wellness apps and green juice, people everywhere sensed that life is animated by something more than flesh and bone. A current. A spark. A breath that moves through everything. Life.

Every culture gave it a name:

  • Qi (chi): the life force flowing through the body in Chinese tradition

  • Prana: the vital breath of life in Indian traditions, carried along subtle channels called nadis

  • Ki: the energy of life in Japan

  • Biofield: the modern, lab-coat-friendly term, for when your inner scientist wants a seat at the table

Different languages, same whisper: you are more than what can be seen..

The idea is that when your energy flows freely, you feel open, vibrant, and at home in yourself. When it's stalled by stress, grief, or the weight of carrying too much for too long, you may feel heavy, scattered, or disconnected from your own inner light. Energy healing is the practice of tending that flow with presence, intention, care and kindness.

The Many Paths of Energy Work

  • Reiki: From Japan, in the early 1900s. The word itself is often described as "universal life energy." The practitioner rests their hands lightly on or just above you, becoming a quiet channel for peace. Many people describe it as being held by something larger than themselves.

  • Chakra balancing: Seven luminous centers are said to spiral along your spine, from the root (safety and belonging), through the heart (love and compassion), to the crown (connection with the infinite). Working with them through meditation, sound, color, or touch is a way of coming home to yourself, one center at a time.

  • Energy Block Release and Attunement: Energy block release is a hands-off intention-based energy healing that works within 12 different channels of energy that may be affecting your energy system and overall well-being. We work by removing beliefs or helping stuck emotions move through your system.

  • Qigong: Moving meditation. Slow, flowing gestures, deep breath, and focused awareness, like dancing with the invisible. You can practice it alone at sunrise, barefoot in the grass if you're feeling devoted.

  • Sound healing: Singing bowls, gongs, and chimes, whose vibrations many people feel ripple through the body like waves through still water.

  • Pranic and Healing Touch practices: Hands move through the energy field around the body, gently clearing and replenishing what feels dimmed.

What Happens in a Session

In my experience with Reiki or shamanic energy healing: You lie down or sit up, fully clothed, wrapped in the soothing environment created for healing. The room may smell of soothing scents. Perhaps a bowl sings softly in the distance. All there to anchor and ground you in the present moment. Your only task is to breathe, receive and just be.

Some people feel warmth spreading like sunlight through their body. Some feel tingling, floating, or a sudden rush of tears for a grief they didn't know they were holding. Some drift into a sleep so deep it feels like being rocked by the sea. And some simply feel still, which, in a world this loud, is its own kind of miracle.

However it unfolds, it's yours. There's no right way to receive.

Science has not been able to measure the energy practitioners describe, though its getting there, the research is being done. There is still no definitive evidence that energy healing cures disease on its own. However, I do have plenty of personal examples of how energy healing has shifted my thoughts. After energy healing have noticed less obsessive thoughts, or a reframe of how I am looking at a particular situation, or I am just really tired and this gives my body space to process the energy that is being cleared.

What research does show is that many people feel calmer, less anxious, and more at peace after sessions. Why? Perhaps because stillness is medicine. Because being tenderly attended to soothes the nervous system. Because when we set an intention to heal, something in us listens. Whether you trace the peace to energy, to presence, or to the mysterious meeting of the two, the peace itself is real, and you get to decide what meaning it holds for you.

Spiritual practice has always lived comfortably alongside mystery. You don't have to solve it to be nourished by it.

Walking Gently: A Note on Safety

Energy work is soft and non-invasive, but it is a companion, not a substitute, for medical or mental health care.

How to Begin

  1. Set an intention. Ask yourself: what am I longing for? Rest? Release? Reconnection?

  2. Choose your guide with care. Look for someone grounded, humble, and happy to share their training and approach.

  3. Arrive open, to receive. Curiosity is a lovely doorway.

  4. Listen afterward. Journal, rest, drink water, take a slow walk. Notice what shifted, even if it's subtle.

The Bottom Line

Energy healing is an invitation to remember that you are a whole being, body, mind, and spirit, woven together and worthy of tenderness. Whether it works by moving energy, calming the nervous system, or simply giving you permission to pause, many people find in it a sacred kind of rest.

So tonight, take one slow breath all the way down to your toes. Place a hand on your heart. Feel it keeping time, faithfully, quietly; it know exactly what to do, without being asked.

That steady rhythm? That's a pretty good place to start. 🌙
